Mechanical engineering is known to be one of the most versatile and diverse engineering fields. It studies the systems and the objects in motion and is prevalent in all aspects of modern lifestyle and the complex human body.

This kind of engineering is very important in our daily lives, as it is a part of our lifestyle. A high probability that we are using at least a few of the items that have been mechanically engineered.

Some of the common home appliances and gadgets that we use because of mechanical engineering are elevators, generators, AC and engines. This is the kind of engineering that plays a significant role in all of the manufactured technologies, such as an Aeroplan, a car or a refrigerator. It's an important division of engineering as it takes most of our daily lifestyle through the technology that it uses.

Here, we will take you through the versatile landscape of Mechanical Engineering. the roles, duties of a mechanical engineer, career options, salary and even the qualifications needed to pursue a course in this field. You get to know the available degrees, the career advancement opportunities, and such information.

Role of a Mechanical Engineer

A Mechanical Engineer takes a product right from scratch to convert it into an idea for the marketplace. He aims to ensure that the functionality and effective working condition of the product are good enough, ensuring that there is no room for failure.

This can be achieved after he determines the best manufacturing strategy first. For this, he needs to be knowledgeable and know the product parts, their subsystems, and the forces and the thermal environment that it might face.

He needs to use his knowledge to look into the detailing of the product aesthetics, functionality and durability, keeping them in good condition for a longer period of time. Close monitoring of the product parts and their sub-systems would ensure seamless operations and impeccable functionality.

Mechanical Engineers work across a vast number of sectors, like energy conversion, manufacturing, automation, robotics, electronics, computers, biotechnology, aerospace and many such sectors.

Design of new products, Solutions to manufacturing

Mechanical Engineers use their knowledge of engineering and design, and such engineering disciplines, to create products that are functional and can be marketed. They work in product design, so they can be designated as a product manager or a product designer.

They can design, build, develop and test all kinds of tools, engines, machines and such mechanical devices. New product designs can range from small-sized products to large machine tools, like miniature connectors and drill presses.

They help in solving specific issues through a process of analysis. They analyse mechanical and thermal devices and see how they might come in handy in solving problems. They are also responsible for designing and redesigning the devices and subsystems through CAD, a computer-aided design tool highly used in mechanical engineering.

They execute the development of the overall life cycle, analyzing the data, interpreting the results and conducting experiments.

Job Profiles

The foremost responsibility of a mechanical engineer is to ensure smooth functioning, performance and efficiency of engines, the devices and components. They look into the product and evaluate the project requirements. They also need to give their consent to the upper managers and clients on the timeline required to complete the project, the budget and the specifications. Moreover, they ensure that the equipment is safe by modeling, remodeling, and maintaining it. Other than that, they need to be proficient in CAD for application as and when needed.

Scope in Mechanical Engineering

In this field, there's infinite scope in sectors like aerospace, automobile, oil exploration, railway coach factory, research and development, chemical manufacturing plants, robotics, defence, and thermal plants. Also, there are ample opportunities in both the private and government sectors.

Career Opportunities

Once a person secures the needed educational qualifications for a mechanical engineer, there are infinite options for them to opt for. There are numerous jobs in different sectors of mechanical engineering, and as per one's interest and aptitude, they can select the profile. This is a broad field, which comes with many job options, like

Mechanical Engineer - This is the mainstream job profile. The person in charge is responsible for crafting, developing, maintaining and looking after different kinds of equipment and machines. There are a lot of job profiles within this category, such as maintenance and analysis, structural engineering, testing and installation, other than production analysis.

Nuclear Engineer - These engineers can be either an instrumentation or control engineer, a quality engineer, a reactor operator or a process engineer. All these positions are consulted for their knowledge on technical support.

Contracting Civil Engineer - They are consultants in the field of construction and also in designing projects. These projects are buildings, canals, dams and highway construction.

Control and Instrumentation Engineer - Called as C&I Engineers, they are entirely responsible for the development, design, management, installation and maintenance of equipment used in the engineering field. The C&I engineers monitor and control systems and machines.

Automotive Engineer - The role of Automotive Engineer focuses on design, development, production and research. He designs and develops mechanical components and machines that are connected with automobiles.

Maintenance Engineer - The job of this engineer is to maintain and check the functioning of the machines and equipment. They need to monitor the continuous action of the equipment without any disturbances.

Aerospace Engineer - An aerospace engineer is responsible for maintaining and manufacturing aircraft. They are in charge of the airports and overall look after the technical details.

The Specified Industry and Job Roles

There are many industries offering employment, such as the Automotive industry, Aerospace industry, manufacturing industry, the Ministry of Defence, energy utilities, biomedical industry, government agencies, engineering consultancies, construction and building industry and so on.

The most common job roles are those of Mechanical Engineer, Control and Instrumentation Engineer, Contracting Civil Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Aerospace Engineer and Automotive Engineer.

Required Qualifications for Mechanical Engineering

A minimum of 50 to 60 % is needed for admission to this course.

Fun Facts - Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineers play a crucial role in space exploration, robotics, designing spacecraft and systems that operate in extreme conditions.

The uniqueness of mechanical engineers is the study of objects and systems in motion. This field touches every aspect of modern life, which includes the human body, a highly complicated machine.

In ancient Greece, somewhere around 287 B.C, the first known engineer was Archimedes, who invented the lever and pulley. It's even used today! Later on in the 1700s, the Industrial Revolution led to the creation of amazing machines like steam engines! In 1861, in London, the first mechanical engineering school opened.

The first female engineer in India was Ayyalasomayajula Lalitha, born in 1919. In 1943, she graduated from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Tamil Nadu, India, despite being a widow at 18 with a child. She had specialized in electrical engineering and contributed to major projects such as the Bhakra Nangal Dam.

The World Record for “Youngest Mechanical Engineer(M)" was achieved by Subhrajyoti Sardar on 1st August 2022 from Basirhat, West Bengal, India.

As per ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the average age for mechanical engineers is between 36 and 42.
